Key Points

  • ChatGPT now supports Instant Checkout for U.S. users, starting with Etsy sellers and Shopify merchants soon.
  • Powered by the new Agentic Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Stripe.
  • Shoppers can buy products directly in chat without leaving the app.
  • Merchants keep control of payments, fulfillment, and customer relationships.

OpenAI has unveiled a new shopping feature inside ChatGPT, letting U.S. users complete purchases without leaving the conversation. Dubbed Instant Checkout, the system begins with Etsy sellers and will soon expand to Shopify merchants like SKIMS, Glossier, and Spanx.

The feature is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard created with Stripe. It enables AI agents to securely share only the minimum details needed for a purchase while merchants handle payments, fulfillment, and support through their existing systems.

For consumers, the experience is simple: browse, tap “buy,” confirm payment, and check out — all inside ChatGPT. For businesses, it opens access to hundreds of millions of users while keeping full control over customer data and service. OpenAI says carts, more merchants, and international expansion are next.
