TikTok Restores Service in U.S. After Reaching Political Assurances
TikTok has started bringing its platform back online in the United States following a weekend of interruptions. The app was partially blocked after concerns about compliance with a law that threatened to ban the service unless its Chinese owner, ByteDance, divested. President-elect Donald Trump, set for inauguration on Monday, provided fresh assurances that the government wouldn’t penalize companies enabling TikTok’s continued operation—allowing content to reappear for many of its 170 million American users.
In a statement posted on X, TikTok confirmed it’s collaborating with service providers to restore functionality in full. The company thanked Trump for offering the “clarity and assurance” needed to move forward, a move intended to ease fears of legal risk for businesses associated with the platform. While the law still allows a 90-day extension before a ban can be enforced, it’s unclear how ongoing negotiations over TikTok’s Chinese ownership will affect its long-term prospects. For now, though, small businesses that leverage the platform can breathe a sigh of relief, and users eager to create and watch short-form videos can return to swiping once again.
