A six-person, all-women crew has successfully completed a suborbital trip with Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, marking yet another high-profile mission for the private space company. Pop star Katy Perry and TV personality Gayle King were among the passengers led by Lauren Sánchez—Bezos’s fiancée—who served as mission lead. The rocket launched from Blue Origin’s West Texas site early Monday, carrying the group just beyond the Kármán line, commonly recognized as the edge of outer space.
During the brief flight, the capsule reached speeds of over 3,700 km/h and offered the women roughly three minutes of zero-gravity. Microphones picked up cries of excitement—“Oh my goddess!”—while the booster separated and landed autonomously nearby. The capsule then floated gently back to Earth using parachutes, touching down in the Texas desert a short distance from the launch site, where Bezos personally greeted the returning crew with hugs and cheers.
For Perry, who said she prepared by reading Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, the experience was about “surrendering to the unknown” and channeling “divine feminine energy.” Sánchez called the mission a testament to female empowerment in the space sector, but critics question whether space tourism provides meaningful scientific benefit or simply serves as high-priced spectacle. Still, Blue Origin points to the mission as another milestone in making suborbital travel accessible to a wider audience—and in showcasing the potential of privately financed space exploration.
