Tesla’s European Sales Slide 49% Despite Surging EV Market

Tesla’s European sales have tumbled by nearly half in just two months, dropping to 19,046 from 37,311 compared to the same period last year. That’s a stark contrast to the 28.4% rise in EV sales across the region, which suggests Tesla may be losing momentum to rivals like China’s BYD. Observers point to several challenges, from an aging Tesla model lineup to CEO Elon Musk’s controversial public stances, including his recent support for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany party—a stance that’s been widely criticized in Europe.

The issues aren’t limited to Europe. Tesla posted its first annual sales decline in over a decade in January, while the much-hyped Cybertruck has already faced multiple recalls. Last week, the truck was called back after panels near the windshield were found to fly off at high speeds, marking its eighth recall in just over a year. At the same time, the FBI has launched a task force in the U.S. after incendiary devices targeting Tesla showrooms were discovered, reflecting a wave of protest directed at the company’s dealerships in both North America and abroad.

Company officials maintain that new vehicle launches and localized production will help Tesla bounce back. Yet, competitive threats loom large, especially with BYD unveiling an ultra-fast EV charging system that may sway cost-conscious and time-pressed drivers. Although Tesla remains a major EV player in North America, its reversal of fortune in Europe highlights how quickly the global electric vehicle landscape can shift—particularly if public opinion and brand image turn sour.
