Intel Climbs 24% on Leadership Shift, Adds $22 Billion in Value

Intel just had a dramatic $22 billion boost in market value, sending its shares soaring roughly 24% after Lip-Bu Tan was named the new chief executive officer. Investors had been waiting for a jolt of fresh energy at the chipmaking giant, which has been grappling with manufacturing delays and fierce competition in recent years. Tan’s appointment seems to have sparked renewed optimism, positioning Intel as the top performer on the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index and giving it a much-needed edge in a rapidly shifting industry.

Even before taking over officially, Tan wrote to employees that turning things around won’t be a walk in the park, openly acknowledging the complexities ahead. Analysts are already debating whether Intel will break itself up to fix persistent issues or rally the troops and tackle its core challenges from within. Bank of America’s recent upgrade reflects a growing sense that Tan’s leadership could pave the way for genuine restructuring—something investors and employees have been clamoring for.

Intel hasn’t provided a detailed plan on how it’ll split or overhaul foundry operations and chip research, leaving the door wide open for speculation. Some wonder if Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing might still partner on Intel’s U.S. factories, although Tan’s kept that topic under wraps. For now, the market’s betting that the new CEO will bolster the company’s global standing in semiconductor manufacturing, set a modern tone for its product lines, and give investors plenty of reasons to stay tuned.
