Disney has another billion-dollar hit on its hands. “Moana 2,” originally planned as a streaming series, has raked in more than $1 billion worldwide—$445 million domestically and $567 million internationally—after just eight weekends. This achievement marks the third 2024 Disney title to reach the billion-dollar milestone, following “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and cements the studio’s continued box-office dominance.
Despite mixed critical reviews, the animated sequel proved surprisingly resilient in theaters. It smashed the Thanksgiving five-day record with $225 million, toppling the previous benchmark set by “Frozen II” ($125 million) in 2019. Featuring the return of Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as Moana and Maui, “Moana 2” introduces a new cast and follows a daring voyage to the long-lost island of Motufetu. Even with stiff holiday competition, the film remained in the top five at the domestic box office for seven consecutive weekends, eventually dipping to the sixth spot in its eighth frame. Disney’s next major animated offerings—“Zootopia 2” and “Frozen III”—could well extend the studio’s winning streak.
