Hyundai has issued a recall for more than 226,000 SUVs and sedans, including Santa Fe and Elantra models from 2021 and 2022, over a defect in their rearview cameras. The issue, stemming from damaged solder joints on the camera’s printed circuit board, can cause the rearview display to fail, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents. The recall also affects hybrid variants of these vehicles.
The defect, first identified in February, has been under investigation since September 2023 by Hyundai’s internal safety office. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this issue puts the vehicles in violation of federal safety standards requiring rearview cameras to display an image within two seconds of activation. Hyundai has not reported any injuries or accidents tied to the defect but emphasized the urgency of addressing the problem. This marks the automaker’s fourth recall notice in November, raising concerns over manufacturing quality control.
