FIFA Confirms Saudi Arabia as 2034 World Cup Host Amid Controversy

FIFA has officially announced that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 Men’s World Cup, marking the first time the nation will hold the prestigious tournament. The decision was made during an online meeting led by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, where more than 200 member federations showed their support for the bid with resounding applause. Saudi Arabia was the sole bidder for the 2034 event after FIFA's decision to limit eligibility to Asia and Oceania, giving prospective hosts a narrow four-week window to declare their candidacy.

The tournament will place Saudi Arabia under a global spotlight for the next decade as the country prepares to construct and upgrade 15 stadiums, hotels, and transport networks to accommodate the expanded 104-game format. Among the planned venues are ambitious projects like a stadium in Neom, a futuristic city that currently exists only in concept, and another venue designed to sit atop a 200-meter cliff near Riyadh, named after the crown prince.

The decision to award Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup has drawn significant criticism from human rights groups and activists, who argue FIFA has not learned from the controversies surrounding Qatar's 2022 World Cup preparations. Concerns about labor laws, the treatment of migrant workers, and the lack of public assurances for protecting human rights have fueled backlash. This six-nation hosting plan is unprecedented, and football legends like Cristiano Ronaldo have celebrated the unique arrangement, calling it the “most special” World Cup yet.
