The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is looking into what one passenger called a “rough landing” at Halifax Stanfield International Airport over the weekend. The flight, operated by PAL Airlines on behalf of Air Canada Express, touched down Saturday night and experienced what officials believe could be a landing gear issue.
Passenger’s Account
Nikki Valentine, a Halifax resident on board, said she felt a “massive rumble” as the plane landed around 9:30 p.m. The cabin tilted, sparks flew, and small flames appeared before smoke got drawn inside. Thankfully, the pilot quickly gained control of the situation, bringing the plane to a stop without any reported injuries.
Airline and Airport Statements
Airport spokesperson Tiffany Chase confirmed that the plane arrived from St. John’s, Newfoundland, but was unable to reach the terminal. The crew, along with 73 passengers, had to be off-loaded by bus. While some minor injuries were initially reported, Nova Scotia RCMP clarified that no one was actually harmed.
Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick noted the aircraft involved was a Bombardier Q400. He confirmed that the suspected problem with the landing gear prevented the plane from taxiing normally. The brief runway closure halted flight activity at Halifax Stanfield, though operations have since resumed.
Baggage Delays and Inconveniences
Even with no injuries reported, many travelers remain frustrated over being separated from their luggage. Valentine said she and other passengers had to leave bags on board and were told it might be up to three days before they get them back. Some passengers needed essential items like wallets and keys that they weren’t allowed to retrieve during the evacuation.
“It’s definitely inconvenient,” Valentine remarked. “But you’d rather be without a suitcase or backpack than have a serious accident.”
The TSB has not yet released a detailed timeline for the investigation, but has begun collecting data and statements from those involved. As the safety board looks into the precise cause, travelers are left waiting—hopeful that an in-depth review can help prevent future incidents of this kind.
